Harmful Effects of Smoking

Regardless of the cigarette smoking warnings that are shared with the public, millions of people continue to smoke. Caution that reads “cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health” appears to do very little to deter people from their cigarette smoking ways. Every year, more people die from smoking-related issues, and many others are disabled or living with complications because of its impact on their health. Smoking can wreak havoc on the body in many different ways. Here we’ll take a look at some of the harmful effects of tobacco.

Going Blind


If you want to maintain good vision as you grow older, lay off the cigarette packs. When it comes to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), smoking increases the risk of developing the condition in adults over 65. Smokers are roughly three times more likely to develop vision problems, including others, like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and Dry Eye Syndrome. While AMD, for example, progresses slowly and by itself doesn’t cause total blindness, it can diminish a person’s quality of life. It can impact the ability to drive, see faces, write, cook, or read.

Type 2 Diabetes


Smoking is not just a contributing factor of type 2 diabetes, but also increases the risk of complications associated with the condition, such as heart disease, vision problem, nerve damage, reduced blood flow to legs and feet and amputation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), active smokers are 30–40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than nonsmokers. Diabetics who smoke tend to have greater difficulty with insulin dosing and with managing their diabetes. The more cigarettes consumed, the higher the risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Erectile Dysfunction


Male smokers could see their sexual health and function suffer as a result of smoking. The chemicals in cigarette smoke can affect the blood vessels in the body, causing them to narrow. The blood vessels that supply blood to the penis can become restricted and make it unable to achieve or maintain an erection that is rigid enough for sexual performance-erectile dysfunction. Nicotine and tobacco negatively impact the sexual health of a smoker because of their detrimental effects on blood supply. The level of exposure to smoking often determines the severity of erectile dysfunction.

Poor Oral Hygiene


Smoking can have a negative impact on your oral health, and smokers are at an increased risk (twice as likely) of developing gum disease. Smoking tobacco not only stains the teeth, but it also weakens the immune system that helps with fighting off infections, like a gum infection. Gum damage from smoking makes it more difficult for the gums to heal. The more cigarettes you smoke and the longer you smoke, the higher the risk of gum disease.

Smoking does a great deal of harm to the body and reduces the overall health of the smoker. From contributing to blindness to poor oral hygiene, smoking increases the risk of developing health problems and cause-specific health complication. Quitting smoking can transform a smoker’s health, and so, it’s never too late to drop the habit.
